Uganda is mourning the death of national footballer David Owori, who died after being attacked by suspected robbers near his home in Makindye, Kampala. Police said the 27-year-old was assaulted after reportedly resisting an attempt to steal his mobile phone and other personal belongings. He was rushed to a nearby clinic before being transferred to a private hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Witnesses said a group of attackers ambushed Owori on Tuesday night, struck him with paving stones and fled with his belongings, leaving him unconscious. The defender, who captained Sports Club (SC) Villa and also represented the Uganda national team, the Cranes, was widely regarded as one of the country’s leading footballers. Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible.

The tragic death has triggered an outpouring of grief across Uganda’s football community. In a statement, SC Villadescribed Owori as more than just a player, saying the club had lost “a leader, brother and friend.” Tributes have also poured in from football officials, teammates and supporters, many of whom have called for swift justice while expressing concern over the growing level of violent crime in the capital.

Owori’s killing has renewed public debate over security in Kampala, where violent robberies have become a growing concern. Authorities say detectives are pursuing several leads as the investigation continues, while many Ugandans have urged the government to strengthen measures against violent crime to prevent similar tragedies.
