Nigerians have praised Ademola Lookman, after an incredible performance against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic, in a 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday.
The Eagles returned to winning ways since March this year, when they recorded a 2-1 victory over the Black Stars of Ghana in an international friendly back in March. The team subsequently suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Eagles of Mali and went winless in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho, Zimbabwe, South Africa and then defeat to Benin respectively.
However, after a stormy session, the Eagles won their first game in several matches, with Lookman being the star of the game. The Atalanta star put in a superlative performance in the encounter. He was the livewire in Nigeria’s attack and provided a constant threat for the Eagles. The 26-year-old scored two goals to see Nigeria through to a 3-0 victory.
It could have been three as he got one-on-one with the Beninois goalkeeper once but failed to convert.
The Ballon d’Or nominee opened the scoring with a superb solo effort late in the first half, breaking the deadlock after a period of sustained pressure from the Nigerian side. His individual brilliance set the tone for what was to come in the second half.
Not content with just one goal, Lookman sealed his exceptional performance with a second strike, completing his brace and putting the result beyond any doubt.
Reacting on X, formerly Twitter, Nigerians eulogised the former RB Leipzig star.

Lookman wanted to leave Atalanta this summer but the proposed move to Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain fell through. The Italian club is said to be planning to offer him an improved deal, to scare off interests in January.
