Kogi Man Arrested After Allegedly Setting Wife Ablaze Over Burnt Clothes
Police say suspect admitted attack as victim receives treatment at Lokoja hospital

The Kogi State Police Command has arrested Jacob Irewa over an alleged attempted culpable homicide involving his wife, Berida Irawo, at Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja. The incident occurred on Friday, Aug. 14, 2026, following a domestic disagreement, according to police.
Police spokesperson ASP Salisu Afusat said the dispute began after Irawo allegedly burnt some of her husband’s clothes without his permission because she believed he was no longer using them. The suspect reportedly threatened her, collected petrol from his motorcycle and allegedly used it to set her on fire.
The police said the B Division Surveillance Team, Felele, responded to the incident at about 8:30 p.m. and arrested Irewa at the scene. The victim survived the attack and is receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele, while police said the suspect admitted setting his wife ablaze during questioning.
Commissioner of Police CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi condemned the incident and reiterated the command’s zero tolerance for domestic violence. He urged residents to resolve domestic disputes through lawful means, while police said Irewa would be charged to court after the investigation is concluded.
