Zamfara Police Foil Bandit Attack, Avert IED Threat

No casualties recorded as officers repel attackers and bomb disposal team makes road safe

The Zamfara State Police Command has foiled a bandit attack on security personnel in Zurmi and averted a suspected improvised explosive device threat along the Gurusu–Gwashi Road in Bukkuyum Local Government Area. The command said both incidents occurred on August 12, 2026.

According to police spokesperson Yazid Abubakar, armed bandits attacked security personnel deployed to provide protection during a tree-planting exercise at the Zurmi Muslims’ Praying Ground along Rukudawa Road. The officers took cover and engaged the attackers in a gun battle, forcing them to retreat into a nearby forest. Police said traces of blood at the attackers’ position suggested that some may have sustained gunshot injuries.

In the separate incident, a suspected landmine or IED exploded along the Gurusu–Gwashi Road, causing panic among residents and commuters. No death or injury was recorded. The police subsequently deployed its Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, alongside personnel from the Violence Crime Response Unit, to sweep the area and render it safe.

The command said joint security patrols have been sustained along the route and surrounding areas to prevent further attacks and detect possible explosive threats. Police urged residents and road users to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements, abandoned objects or other security concerns to the authorities.
