Protest over economic hardship begins in Niger State
Youths in Niger State trooped out en masse on Monday, to protest the biting economic hardship in the country.
There had been reports that the nationwide protest over the cost of living crisis and rising inflation would begin on August 1.
But some youths paraded markets and streets in the state carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Fuel subsidy must be back”, “Enough is enough”, “Stop anti-masses policies”, “We are not slaves in our country”, “Hardship is unbearable”.
According to TheCable, the protesters are currently marching through the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, in the Suleja Local Government Area of the state, while chanting anti-government slogans.
President Bola Tinubu, religious and political leaders have appealed to youths to shelve the August 1-10 demonstrations.
The Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian army and police have also warned that the protests could be hijacked by hoodlums and “unscrupulous agents”.
