AFCON 2025 qualifier: Super Eagles grind out 1-0 win over Libya

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru proved to be a super substitute as he netted the decisive goal as the Super Eagles laboured to a 1-0 win over Libya in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture in Uyo on Friday.

The Super Eagles passed the ball around with confidence early on but were not able to carve out any real scoring chance.

Alex Iwobi created Nigeria’s first chance of the match but his effort was saved by Libya goalkeeper Murad Al Wuheeshi.

The Nigerian senior national team continued mounting more pressure on the visitors’ defence, with Al Wuheeshi producing another decent save to deny Ademola Lookman.

Captain William Troost-Ekong shot wide from inside the box two minutes before the half-hour mark.

The Libyans were content to stay back to soak up the pressure and needed Al Wuheeshi to stop another effort from Iwobi in the 40th minute.

The play was interrupted for around five minutes after the break to allow Al Wuheeshi to receive treatment for an injury.

Eagles wasted many clear-cut chances afterwards before Dele-Bashiru riffled home the winner five minutes from time after he was fed the ball by Moses Simon.
