Apple’s AI-Powered Siri in China to Use Alibaba’s Qwen
Apple is integrating Alibaba’s Qwen AI technology with Siri and other Apple Intelligence features for users in mainland China, marking a major localization of its AI strategy.

Apple is moving ahead with its artificial-intelligence strategy in China by integrating Alibaba’s Qwen AI models into selected Apple Intelligence features. The partnership is intended to provide Chinese users with more advanced AI capabilities while meeting the country’s regulatory requirements. Apple had previously said that its new Siri AI features would not initially be available in China while it worked through regulatory requirements.
The integration gives eligible Mac users in mainland China the ability to connect Qwen with Siri and Writing Tools. Siri can use Qwen to provide more detailed responses and assist with tasks involving photos and documents, while Writing Tools can use the model to generate text and images. The rollout represents a significant expansion of what Siri can do for users in the Chinese market.
The partnership is particularly important because Apple has taken a different approach to AI in China compared with other markets. Regulatory requirements mean Apple cannot simply deploy the same AI architecture used elsewhere. Instead, the company has been working with Chinese technology companies, including Alibaba and Baidu, to provide AI services that can operate within China’s regulatory environment. Apple Intelligence received regulatory approval for China in July.
For Alibaba, the agreement gives Qwen access to Apple’s enormous ecosystem and potentially millions of users. Integrating Qwen at the system level could give Alibaba greater exposure beyond its existing applications and cloud services. For Apple, meanwhile, the partnership provides access to a locally developed AI model while allowing the company to continue building its own hardware and software experience around Siri and Apple Intelligence.
The development highlights the increasingly regional nature of the global AI industry. Instead of relying on one model everywhere, technology companies are increasingly adapting AI systems to local regulations, infrastructure and market conditions. Apple’s partnership with Alibaba shows how even one of the world’s largest technology companies must adjust its AI strategy to operate effectively in different regions. As Apple continues developing its next-generation Siri, the China rollout could become an important test of how successfully the company can combine its ecosystem with locally supplied AI technology.
