BBNAIJA S9: Twists, Turns as BETA pair ‘Loose Guard’, loses immunity and guard
Winning the challenge comes with its rewards, especially for this season 9 of Big Brother Naija show
Lost opportunities are an inevitable part of growth and learning. It can be a challenging experience, but it’s essential to learn from it and move forward.
This was the case the with dynamic duo, Tjay and Ben, in the ongoing Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) Season 9, with the theme: ‘No Loose Guard’.
The pair of the 28 housemates made up of 14 pairs on Monday evening lost the opportunity to become winners of the ‘Custodian Challenge’, a task in this year’s edition of the large following reality TV show, where housemates compete to win immunity from eviction and other rewards.
The objective of the game is to enable the pair housemates work together, showcase teamwork, and complete tasks efficiently through collaboration, communication, and strategy.
It promotes trust and bonding among housemates, testing their problem-solving skills, adaptability, and ability to work under pressure.
Winning the challenge comes with its rewards, especially for this season 9 of Big Brother Naija show, which is immunity from eviction for the week. So also is losing the challenge, which comes with its consequences – exposing the housemates to the risk of eviction.
This did not go down well with Tjay, the other half of the BETA pair, thus caused a riff between the duo.
The Custodian Challenge is an added exciting layer in this year’s edition of reality competition, and a strategy by its organisers to push housemates to work together and showcase their skills. Unlike previous editions of the game show, in this year’s Big Brother Naija, there is ‘No Immunity for the ‘Heads of House’, hence, they do not have immunity from eviction nominations.
In the previous week (Wk 1), the Ndi Nne pair won the first custodian challenge, granting them immunity for the first week of the show. The Mbadiwe twins emerged the first Head of House (HoH) following a tie that was broken by the Ndi Nne (the custodians). Ben and Tjay were the lucky pair that won the first immunity challenge last week.
Another opportunity presented itself on Monday night during the second custodian challenge. Despite their best efforts, they did not win. Instead, the Streeze (Toby Forge and Mayor Frosh) won the challenge, providing them a much-needed break from being in the bottom four, hence they are exempted from eviction for the week.
The loss did not sit well with Tjay, who thought the challenge was “basic engineering.” After the game, Tjay asked Ben to explain how they failed, and between disappointment and guilt, Ben became upset. He did not appreciate how Tjay questioned him and complained to other housemates.
Chizoba tried to calm Ben down, and other housemates also chipped in, with Shaun emphasising the importance of the custodian challenge and how disappointment might cause one to snap.
As housemates played games chaired by Nelly and Fairme David, Tjay sat alone in the bedroom, a situation that clearly showed how pained he was with game result. Meanwhile, Ben continued in the games, daring other housemates in a game of “concentration concentration.”
Tjay and Ben’s friendship has never been questionable in the house; their bond was evident at the Thursday night pool party, as Ben helped Tjay out of the pool as he struggled in the water. Ben also spoke with Tjay when Rhuthee was upset over Tjay’s recommendation to use food sparingly.
Perhaps Ben is feeling blamed for losing the custodian challenge, as he was responsible for finishing the game. According to Tjay, he did not do it strategically enough, and that’s what cost them the win. Hopefully, the duo can talk out the matter soon and make amends, and try their best to win upcoming challenges and hopefully gain immunity once again.
Like popular favourite song of the immediate past governor of Rivers State now FCT Minister, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, “As e dey sweet us, e go dey pain dem”, while Tjay sulks with their loss, the Ndi Nne emerged the new HoH, while the Mbadiwe twins won the Immunity Challenge, securing their safety from eviction for the week.
Meanwhile, viewers need not ‘Loose Guard’ as Big Brother is full of twists and turns; he might introduce unexpected twists, such as surprise pair swaps, hidden advantages or disadvantages, game-changing rewards or penalties.
Note that immunity rules may change throughout the season, and additional twists may affect immunity status. The bottom four pairs, as determined by votes, are at risk of eviction. The show’s host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, announces the evicted pairs.
