Manchester United fans revelled in interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy’s winning start as his side thrashed Leicester City 5-2 in the Carabao Cup.
Two days after Erik ten Hag was sacked as United boss, and his assistant Van Nistelrooy was appointed as his stand-in, the Red Devils marched into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a crushing win over Leicester. The United legend promised entertaining football and the supporters got it at Old Trafford on Wednesday night. After the victory, many fans took to social media to express their delight at Ten Hag’s exit and Van Nistelrooy’s triumphant first game in charge.
@UnitedDerek wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “We need to call Ten Hag and sack him again.”
@madrid_total2 tweeted: “LIFE WITHOUT TEN HAG!” and @MaleAdvocate28 put: “Manchester United is back.”
@AmorimRedArmy commented: “Life without ETH is so much better already, haven’t enjoyed a game of football in god knows how long,” and @RomeInTheEast wrote: “No Erik, no problem!!!!”
@Utdpal_ added: “Manchester united after sacking their manager plays like prime Barca, wtf,” while @mister_ade5 stated: “Best night of my life in months.”
While United try and recruit Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim as Ten Hag’s successor, this impressive victory over the Foxes will have lifted the mood around Old Trafford. However, sacking Ten Hag is unlikely to solve all the club’s problems and they could be brought back down to earth with a defeat this weekend. Plus, they are languishing down in 14th in the table.
Van Nistelrooy’s United return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon when they host Chelsea, before taking on PAOK in the Europa League next Thursday night.
