Court Jails Two Men for Belonging to Cult Groups in Ogun

Convicts sentenced to seven years each after prosecution proves cult membership

A Special Anti-Cultism Court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has sentenced two men to seven years’ imprisonment each for belonging to an unlawful cult group. The convicts were identified as Sodiq Idowu, 27, and Akintope Akinmolayan, 22.

The two men were convicted on a one-count charge of membership of an unlawful society. The court, presided over by Magistrate O.L. Oke, held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt before finding them guilty.

The prosecutor, Insp. Olaide Rawlings, told the court that the offence was committed on September 4, 2023, in the Ogbaiyo area of Agbado, Ifo Local Government Area. She said police officers were alerted after suspected cultists engaged in a rival fight, leading to the arrest of the two defendants while other suspects fled. During interrogation, the men reportedly confessed to belonging to the Eiye Confraternity.

The court consequently sentenced Idowu and Akinmolayan to seven years each without an option of fine. The case highlights the continued legal crackdown on cult-related activities in Ogun State.
