David Nweze Umahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Works, is making a significant impact within President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

His performance has drawn widespread acclaim, with analysts such as Johnson Kolawole, Jide Ojo, and Bell Ihua from the Africa Polling Institute highlighting his exceptional contributions.

David Umahi’s rise to prominence is a testament to his extensive background in engineering and governance.

Before his current role, Umahi had a brief stint as the senator representing Ebonyi South and served as the governor of Ebonyi State from 2015 to 2023. He also held the position of deputy governor from 2011 to 2015.

His tenure as governor was marked by substantial infrastructure development, including the construction of over 20 flyovers, despite Ebonyi’s limited resources. His engineering expertise, backed by over 30 years of experience and a Fellowship with the Nigerian Society of Engineers, has been pivotal to his success.

Umahi’s efforts as Minister of Works are particularly noteworthy. He has overseen the construction of concrete roads nationwide and has been actively inspecting road projects to ensure quality and progress.

A notable achievement under his ministry was the reopening of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos after extensive maintenance, which received commendation from Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

President Tinubu’s appointment of Umahi is seen as a strategic move to address Nigeria’s infrastructural challenges. This decision underscores a commitment to merit and proven competence, breaking away from traditional practices of misaligned placements.

David Umahi’s leadership is anticipated to foster unity across political, religious, and ethnic lines while driving significant infrastructural transformation across Nigeria.

David Umahi’s work as Minister of Works is not just about building roads and bridges but about bridging divides and uniting the nation. With the necessary support, his tenure promises to bring about substantial and lasting improvements to Nigeria’s infrastructure.
