Edo election: IGP orders arrest of spy officer over comment against Ighodalo
With less than two weeks to the governorship election in Edo state, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun has ordered the arrest of a Spy Policeman in a viral video, who asked the Edo electorates not to vote for the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Asue Ighodalo.
In the viral video clip, the man in Spy Police uniform was heard saying that the current Governor, Godwin Obaseki and the PDP candidate have committed crimes against the people of the state.
He implored voters to see the election as an opportunity to fight back, stressing that the governor and his anointed candidate betrayed democracy in the state.
He said, “The election is not about the APC, PDP or the Labour Party, it is about the act Governor Obaseki Asue Ighodalo committed against the good people of Edo State.
“They have fought and betrayed democracy, they have abandoned the rule of law and stole our resources. This is the time to judge them”.
But the Nigeria Police, in a statement on Wednesday, condemned the comment.
Force Spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adfejobi in a statement clarified that the individual is not a regular officer of the NPF, but a Supernumerary (Spy) Police Officer, who was trained by the Nigeria Police for specific security functions, primarily within their place of employment.
“They are not on the payroll of the NPF and do not swear to the oath of allegiance like sworn regular police officers, thus they have the right to belong to any political party of their choice and freedom of expression.
“In this extant case, the Police frown at the wearing of his official SPY uniform and engaging in political activities”.
The statement added that the individual involved has been arrested for further investigations.
