FG, Labour Agree on Minimum Wage of N70,000
The Federal Government and Organised Labour have agreed on the minimum wage of N70,000.
The Minister of Information and Orientation, Mohammed Idris made the closure after President Bola Tinubu meet with the leadership of Organised Labour, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) led by Joe Ajaero and that of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) led by Festus Osifo.
Minister of State for Labour, Nkiru Onyejeocha, said both parties agreed that the minimum wage review be reduced to three years, stating that five years is too long.
Ajaero, said Labour agreed to government’s offer because of the proviso that the minimum wage will be reviewed every three years.
He said “we are taking this with mix feelings because of the situation of the economy.”
Osifo, on his part said the President made an announcement of N70,000 and by next week the bill will be transmitted to the National Assembly.
He said the organised labour also appealed to President Tinubu to intervened in the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), over their four months withheld salaries and ensure the tertiary institutions are not closed.
Osifo also said they commended the President on the student loan but government must ensure only the indigent students benefits and not cronies of government.
