Google Reshuffles AI Leadership as Competition Intensifies
Demis Hassabis moves into a broader scientific role while Koray Kavukcuoglu takes operational control of Google DeepMind amid growing pressure from OpenAI and Anthropic.

Google is making a major change to its AI leadership structure as competition in the artificial intelligence industry intensifies. Demis Hassabis, co-founder and former CEO of Google DeepMind, is stepping away from day-to-day management to become chair of DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet. The move allows Hassabis to focus more heavily on advanced AI research, artificial general intelligence (AGI), and scientific discovery, while Google places greater emphasis on operational execution and commercial AI products.
Taking over operational leadership is Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind’s longtime chief technology officer. He will serve as senior vice president and oversee areas including AI research, model development, Gemini, and developer-focused products. Kavukcuoglu has been deeply involved in Google’s AI research for years, making the transition an internal promotion rather than a move to bring in an outside executive. The restructuring gives Google a leadership model that separates long-term scientific direction from the day-to-day challenge of rapidly delivering competitive AI products.
The reshuffle comes at a particularly important moment for Google. The company remains one of the world’s strongest AI organizations, but it faces increasingly aggressive competition from OpenAI and Anthropic, particularly in advanced reasoning and consumer-facing AI products. Reports have also highlighted delays surrounding Google’s next flagship Gemini release, increasing pressure on the company to move faster. Google has simultaneously been dealing with the departure of several highly respected AI researchers, including longtime AI leader Jeff Dean, who is leaving with other researchers to establish a new venture focused on AI-powered scientific research.
Hassabis’ new position does not mean he is leaving Google. Instead, it gives him more freedom to concentrate on some of the company’s most ambitious scientific goals. His work has included major breakthroughs such as AlphaGo and AlphaFold, and he has repeatedly argued that AI could transform scientific research and medicine. He will also continue working with Isomorphic Labs, the Alphabet-backed company applying AI to drug discovery. Google therefore retains one of the industry’s most influential AI scientists while giving another senior technical leader responsibility for execution across DeepMind.
Ultimately, the leadership reshuffle reflects how the AI race is changing inside Google’s organization. The company is moving from a period dominated by foundational research toward one where speed, product execution, commercialization and large-scale deployment are becoming increasingly important. Google still has enormous advantages in AI research, computing infrastructure and its Gemini ecosystem, but rivals are moving quickly. The new structure under Hassabis and Kavukcuoglu will be closely watched as Google attempts to convert its scientific strength into faster-moving AI products and maintain its position at the front of the global AI race.
