Hon. Ikwechegh to be arraigned in Kuje court over Bolt driver assault

Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, the House of Representatives member from Abia State, who assaulted a Bolt driver in the Federal Capital Territory, is scheduled to be arraigned before the Kuje Magistrate Court today.

The interrogation and prosecution of Ikwechegh are being handled by the Special Investigative Unit of the Inspector General of Police.

Our correspondent who is covering the issue, reports that the lawmaker, representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State, was captured in a video physically assaulting the Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.

The unfortunate incident happened on October 27 when the driver was delivering a package to the lawmaker at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.

In the face of the massive public outcry, the federal legislator tendered an apology and promised to cooperate with the police in their investigation. He further said that he was seeking counseling over his actions.

In a statement, activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju said, “We are on our way to Kuje Magistrate Court for the arraignment of the honourable member who assaulted our client, Mr. Steven, a Bolt driver. The IGP’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is in charge of the investigation and prosecution.

“The media is invited to cover the arraignment, which is scheduled for 12 pm today at Kuje Magistrate.”
