Nigerian entrepreneur and investor, Chukwujekwu Maduabuchukwu Onwughalu, simply known as Jekwu Onwughalu, has revealed how he started one of the biggest freight companies in the world.
Jekwu Onwughalu, who is based in Calgary, Canada, attended the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Imo State, where he bagged a Bsc in mechanical engineering. His passion for how various components of an entire engine work independently and collectively was initiated at his father’s auto-workshop. In his undergraduate days, he would spend his holidays at his dad’s mechanic workshop.
“Upon graduation from the university, I was posted to Shell Canada where I completed a 1 year training programme under the National Youth Service Corps which began a very successful career journey in Oil and gas”, he explained.
Jekwu Onwughalu’s exposure in the oil and gas sector formed a major influence in his future achievements till date. He obtained a master’s degree in petroleum engineering from Heriot Watt University in Scotland, United Kingdom. He spent 15 years professionally in Drilling, Completions and Workover operations for multinational oil companies in both Nigeria and overseas, occupying key positions.
In 2012, the Jenik Freight CEO, who has six other siblings, relocated to Canada. Four years after, he would leverage his networking and expertise to start his own company, inspiring himself to succeed, in the face of scare black mentors in the industry. However, Jekwu Onwughalu who is married and blessed with three children–Kamsi, Ebuka and Ebube, stuck to his convictions, took the risks and faced the challenges head-on.

Jekwu Onwughalu has passion for volunteering and giving back to the community through service, having served as President of Igbo Cultural Association of Calgary (ICAC), Vice-President of Igbo Cultural Association of Calgary, Co-Chairman of Igbo Day event, Trustee for Anambra State Association among others. He explained the company’s little secret to success under such a short period of time.
