Kalshi Demands Netflix to Remove Trailer Over ‘Prediction Games’ Documentary

Prediction market company Kalshi has demanded that Netflix remove the trailer for its upcoming documentary, The Prediction Games, claiming it contains false and defamatory content that damages the company’s reputation. The legal dispute has emerged just days before the documentary’s scheduled release, putting both companies in the spotlight.

Kalshi sent Netflix a cease-and-desist letter accusing the streaming giant of using misleading footage and fabricated visual elements in the documentary’s trailer. According to the company, the promotional video wrongly suggests that users were placing sports-related prediction trades through Kalshi in Las Vegas during the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, despite a court order that currently prevents the company from offering those markets in Nevada.

The company argues that the trade shown in the trailer actually took place in May 2025, well before the Nevada restrictions came into effect. Kalshi also claims that the trade slip displayed does not resemble its real interface and includes terminology, such as “bet slip,” that has never been used on its platform. The company believes these details create a misleading impression that it ignored legal restrictions and continued operating unlawfully.

Netflix has strongly denied the allegations. A spokesperson for the company said none of the footage or documents shown in the documentary were fabricated. According to Netflix, the scene was filmed during a World Cup viewing event in Las Vegas, while the trade shown on screen was simply a screenshot of an older transaction made before the court restrictions existed. The company maintains that the documentary accurately represents the events and follows high journalistic standards.

The disagreement centres on how the trailer combines footage from different periods. Kalshi argues that viewers could wrongly conclude the company was violating a court order, potentially harming its reputation while it continues to face legal challenges in several U.S. states. The company is asking Netflix not only to remove the trailer but also to issue a public correction withdrawing what it describes as false and defamatory claims.

The documentary explores the rapidly growing world of prediction markets, featuring interviews with leading figures in the industry, including Kalshi CEO Tarek Mansour and Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan. It examines how these platforms have attracted billions of dollars in trading volume while also drawing increasing attention from regulators, who continue to debate whether such services should be treated as financial exchanges or forms of gambling.

The dispute highlights the growing tension between documentary filmmakers and the companies they investigate. As documentaries become more influential in shaping public opinion, businesses are increasingly willing to challenge portrayals they believe are inaccurate or misleading. For Netflix, the case raises questions about editorial responsibility and factual accuracy, while for Kalshi, it is another chapter in its ongoing effort to defend its business model amid regulatory scrutiny.

It remains unclear whether Netflix will make any changes to the trailer or documentary before or after its release. If the two sides fail to reach an agreement, the disagreement could escalate into a formal defamation lawsuit, making it one of the most closely watched legal disputes involving a streaming platform and a technology company this year.
