Liverpool have reportedly scheduled contract talks with Virgil van Dijk for the end of 2024.
The Dutchman is one of three Liverpool stars who have entered the final 12 months of their contracts, along with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.
The Liverpool captain has previously stated that he is happy at Anfield, but he recently admitted that there had been no progress in contract discussions.
As it stands, Liverpool are running the risk of losing Van Dijk for nothing next summer, with the defender able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs from January.
Liverpool’s hierarchy are currently focused on the summer transfer window as they look to strengthen Arne Slot’s squad before the August 30 deadline.
However, the Reds are wary of Van Dijk’s contract situation and are seemingly making plans to hold discussions over a new deal.
According to Football Insider, Liverpool are planning to hold contract talks with Van Dijk towards the end of the calendar year.
The Reds are seemingly keen to wait until the season has got well underway before they hold formal negotiations at the end of 2024.
Van Dijk may have turned 33 last month, but he still remains one of the most important players in the Liverpool squad.
The Netherlands international has made 270 competitive appearances since joining the Reds from Southampton in January 2018.
Van Dijk has enjoyed significant success during his time at Anfield, helping the club win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and two EFL Cups.
While there may be uncertainty surrounding his long-term future, Van Dijk will currently be focused on Liverpool’s Premier League opener against newly-promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday.
