Man Utd ‘make contact’ with Xavi as ten Hag’s sacking still possible

Manchester United have reportedly made contact with former Barcelona boss Xavi as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag’s future at Manchester United still appears uncertain despite a morale-boosting victory over Brentford last time out. The Red Devils have identified Xavi as a potential replacement and have contacted the 44-year-old “twice in the last few months,” according to the Daily Mail. Xavi has been out of work since leaving Barcelona at the end of last season and does not want to coach in Spain again.

Ten Hag has been under pressure after overseeing a disappointing start to the season. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has admitted the club are currently not where they want to be but has insisted that sacking Ten Hag is not his call. United will have been boosted by victory over Brentford on Saturday but Ten Hag will know that speculation over his future will continue unless he can dramatically improve both results and performances at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag spoke about his future after seeing his team beat Brentford. He said: “My focus is only on this. What everyone is writing is coming off my shoulders. I can deal with this. The players only have to think about the team performance, to have the right work ethic, to put everything in that they have. I know they are brilliant players. if you are determined then we will score goals and bring in wins. That’s what everyone expects.”

Manchester United face a busy week of action with a trip to Fenerbahce, managed by old boss Jose Mourinho, in the Europa League on Thursday followed by a Premier League clash with West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday.
