OpenAI’s Enterprise Revenue Surpasses Consumer Business

OpenAI says revenue from business customers has overtaken consumer revenue, marking a major shift as companies rapidly adopt ChatGPT and other AI tools for work.

OpenAI’s enterprise business has reached a major milestone, with revenue from business customers now surpassing revenue from individual consumers for the first time. The crossover happened earlier than the company had previously expected, highlighting how quickly businesses are adopting generative AI for software development, research, customer support and other workplace tasks. OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar confirmed the development to investors on August 14.

The company’s overall revenue pace has also accelerated significantly. OpenAI is now generating roughly $2 billion in revenue per month, according to the company, while its products reach more than one billion weekly active users and more than two million businesses. The growing enterprise contribution suggests that commercial customers are becoming an increasingly important part of OpenAI’s business model.

Enterprise adoption is being driven by the expanding capabilities of ChatGPT and OpenAI’s developer tools. Businesses are increasingly using AI for coding, document analysis, research, automation and internal knowledge management. OpenAI has also been expanding its enterprise offerings and strengthening its commercial organization, including the recent appointment of Dali Rajic as chief revenue officer.

The milestone is particularly important because OpenAI is competing directly with Anthropic, which has built a strong position among business customers through Claude and Claude Code. OpenAI’s latest figures indicate that its enterprise strategy is gaining significant momentum, although some independent measurements still show Anthropic maintaining an advantage in the number of businesses using its products.

The shift from consumer-led growth toward enterprise revenue could have major implications for OpenAI’s future. Business customers generally represent larger and potentially more predictable contracts than individual subscriptions, while widespread workplace adoption can create deeper integration of AI into everyday operations. As OpenAI continues expanding its enterprise products, the company is increasingly positioning AI not simply as a consumer chatbot, but as a core technology platform for businesses worldwide.
