PHOTO: Family returns bride price to would-be husband

A family gave out their daughter, Na’omi, in a traditional wedding in New Karu Town of Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, has reportedly returned the pride prive to the family of the groom.

It was said that the <span;>bride price was fixed N100, 000, but on reaching the point where the marriage list was to be submitted, the bride’s family surprisingly took just N1, 000 and returned N99,000 to the groom, Amos Philemon, who is from the family of Philemon Dara of Bwari, Abuja, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to the bride’s family, the idea behind returning the money is to demonstrate the mindset that their daughter cannot be sold, and as such, the money had to be returned, with only a token received as dowry to fulfill the culture of marriage.

The gesture is a departure from other traditions in parts of Nigeria, particularly in the South-east, where families charge humongous amounts as pride price.
