Protest: ‘Tinubu didn’t submit his name to IGP in 2012’ – Charly Boy slams Egbetokun
Nigerian singer, Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, better known as Charly Boy, has tackled the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, over conditions issued ahead of the planned nationwide protest.
Youths in the country have vowed to take to the streets across the country on August 1, to demonstrate against the economic crisis in the country.
The Federal Government, religious leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have appealed to the youths to shelve the planned protest.
The police, military and the Department of States Service (DSS), have said intelligence revealed that the protest will be hijacked by those aiming to perpetrate violence and destruction.
While briefing journalists in Abuja on Friday, Egbetokun, specifically asked all groups planning to participate in the demonstrations to submit their details to the commissioners of police in their respective states.
The reason he gave was that the protest was peaceful.
“We acknowledge the constitutional right of Nigerian citizens to peaceful assembly and protest,” the police boss said.
“However, in the interest of public safety and order, we urge all groups planning to protest to provide necessary details to the Commissioner of Police in the state where the protest is intended to take place.
“To facilitate a successful and incident-free protest, they should please provide the following information: state the proposed protest routes and assembly points; expected duration of the protest; and names and contact details of protest leaders and organisers.”
The IG added that the information expected from the organisers also includes measures to prevent hijacking by criminal elements, as well as key identifiers for possible isolation of potential troublemakers.
But reacting in a post on his Facebook page on Sunday, Charly Boy, also known as ‘Area Father’, said Tinubu never submitted his name to the police when he joined other prominent personalities in Lagos 12 years ago to shut down the country, over plan by Goodluck Jonathan-led government to remove fuel subsidy.
“Ask Tunubu if they submitted their names to then inspector general of police when they protested against Jonathan government,” he wrote in pidgin English. Coconut head! Se as im resemble okporlor the fro. Ok, all the people wey no happy with APC gofment submit ur names here make we forward to dis yeye IG. Shebi una get social register, they should ask madam humanitarian! The names of all hungry Nigerians wey wan protest.”
