Remo Stars maintain top position in Nigerian League despite home draw

The battle for the top spot of the Nigeria Premier Football League has been made keener after leaders Remo Stars were unable to secure a victory to consolidate their position.

Remo Stars, playing at home in Ikenne in Ogun State, had to settle for a barren draw against Katsina United, who not a few fans had predicted would bite the dust against the league’s pacesetters, given that they had days earlier suffered the biggest defeat of the league this season, crashing to an embarrassing 6-0 humiliation by Ikorodu United.

Remo Stars’ 0-0 stalemate with Katsina United marked the second time they dropped points at home, after being forced to a barren draw by Rivers United last November.

Despite the draw, Remo Stars were still able to extend their lead on top of the table to seven point, following Rivers United’s 2-0 away loss to Abia Warriors.

Emmanuel Ogbuagu scored for Abia Warriors in the 45th minute, while regular scorer Anthony Ijioma sealed victory for the Warriors in the 76th minute.

The win consolidated Abia Warriors’ third position even as they are on the heels of Rivers United. They will be away to Katsina United next weekend.

Rivers United will hope to renew their title chase as they host troubled Sunshine Stars who are swimming precariously in the murky waters of relegation.

The biggest shock of the weekend was Enugu Rangers losing 2-0 at home to Heartland who are now two steps up the relegation zone. Rangers loss will further dampen the mood in Enugu following the demise of former Nigerian captain Christian Chukwu on Friday.
