‘Targets struck are links to Lukarawa’: Military denies bombing civilians in Sokoto
The Nigerian Military has said airstrikes by a fighter jet in the Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto targted links to Lukarawa terrorist group and not the civilian population.
On Wednesday, there were media reports that airstrikes conducted by the air component of Operation Hadarin Daji (OPHD) targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group had mistakenly killed civilians in the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities.
The reports also quoted sources claiming that the airstrikes left over 10 villagers dead, with several others sustaining various injuries.
However, in a statement, Abubakar Abdullahi, the joint media coordinator for the operation, said the airstrikes targeted locations confirmed to be associated with the Lakurawa terrorist group.
However, in a statement, Abubakar Abdullahi, the joint media coordinator for the operation, said the airstrikes targeted locations confirmed to be associated with the Lakurawa terrorist group.
Abdullahi said all military operations are based on “thorough intelligence and reconnaissance missions” to ensure precision and protect civilian lives.
“These reports have raised concerns; however, it is crucial to clarify that all military operations are conducted based on thorough intelligence and reconnaissance missions,” the statement reads.
“This rigorous process is particularly important when targeting groups like the Lakurawa terrorist organisation, as it aims to ensure precision and protect civilian lives.
“There is a significant risk that terrorist groups may attempt to undermine military successes through media disinformation, necessitating caution concerning unverified claims, especially in the ongoing fight against terrorism and banditry.
“Importantly, the targets struck in the vicinity of Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa have been positively identified as associated with the Lakurawa group, reinforcing the justification for the military action taken.”
Olusola Akinboyewa, spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force, also confirmed to TheCable that the airstrikes were conducted based on credible intelligence from multiple sources and confirmatory aerial surveillance.
“Nevertheless, reports of possible harm to civilians will be thoroughly investigated, and we will update you appropriately,” Akinboyewa said.
