Tim Cook Says Apple May Charge Heavy AI Users for Premium Siri Features

Apple signals that its next-generation AI services could introduce paid tiers for power users as the company looks to offset the rising costs of advanced artificial intelligence.

Apple is preparing for a future where some of its most advanced artificial intelligence features may come at a premium. During the company’s latest earnings call, CEO Tim Cook revealed that Apple is considering charging heavy users of its AI-powered Siri experience, marking the clearest indication yet that the company plans to monetize its growing AI ecosystem.

According to Cook, the next-generation Siri is expected to become a much more capable digital assistant, powered by advanced AI models that can understand on-screen content, perform complex tasks across apps, answer more sophisticated questions, and interact naturally with users. These new capabilities require significantly more computing power than traditional voice assistants, particularly when requests rely on cloud-based AI infrastructure. As a result, Apple believes that its heaviest AI users may eventually pay for expanded access beyond standard usage limits.

While Apple has not officially announced pricing, industry reports suggest the company could introduce a higher-tier iCloud+ subscription that includes increased AI usage allowances. Basic Apple Intelligence features are expected to remain available at no additional cost for compatible devices, but users who rely extensively on AI-powered Siri for productivity, coding, writing, research, or other demanding tasks may eventually need a premium subscription.

The move reflects a broader trend across the technology industry. Running advanced AI models requires enormous investments in data centers, high-performance GPUs, networking infrastructure, and electricity. Companies including OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Anthropic already offer paid subscription plans that unlock higher usage limits and access to their most powerful AI models. Apple now appears to be moving toward a similar business model while maintaining its focus on privacy and on-device processing whenever possible.

Cook also emphasized that Apple sees on-device AI as one of its biggest competitive advantages. By processing many AI tasks directly on iPhones, iPads, and Macs instead of sending everything to cloud servers, Apple aims to improve user privacy, reduce latency, and lower infrastructure costs. However, more advanced requests will still require cloud computing, making premium pricing a practical way to support the growing demand for AI services.

The announcement comes as Apple accelerates its AI strategy following years of criticism that it had fallen behind competitors. The redesigned Siri, new Apple Intelligence features, and deeper integration of generative AI represent one of the company’s biggest software transformations in over a decade. Investors are watching closely to see whether these AI services can become another major source of recurring revenue alongside existing subscriptions such as iCloud+, Apple Music, Apple TV+, and Apple One.

Although no launch date or pricing details have been confirmed, Cook’s comments make one thing clear: artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important part of Apple’s long-term business strategy. If demand for AI-powered Siri continues to grow, premium AI subscriptions could become one of the company’s next major revenue streams while helping finance the massive infrastructure required to deliver increasingly intelligent and personalized experiences.
