Veteran Music Icon ‘Onyeka Onwenu’ buried in Lagos

Onyeka Onwenu, 72-year old, died on July 30, 2024, at Reddington Hospital, Ikeja, after collapsing at an event honouring Stella Okoli, the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

“It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today, and after performing, she sat down and slumped. She was rushed to Reddington Hospital GRA Ikeja where she was pronounced dead.” Eyewitness

The family has just concluded a service of songs in her honour at the fountain of life church in Ilupeju.

Ms Onwenu a US trained broadcaster came into prominence in the 80s when she joined the Nigerian Television Authority.

She later became one of the most prominent female musician with back to back award winning albums and hit songs.

At the height of her career she also veered into acting where she also made her marks and was also involved in Politics.

She was once a Local Government Chairman in her State, Imo.

Talent did pitch its tent in Onyeka Onwenu, she wasn’t only a musician with several successes, but also a broadcaster, actor, politician, and activist.

President Tinubu consoles with the family of the Queen of Songs, whose edifying and mellifluous rendition, ‘One Love’, in the 1990s evoked a fervour of fellowship and harmony.

The President recalls the many artistic interventions of the late musical icon in promoting public good, noting her classic collaboration with King Sunny Ade on ‘Wait for Me’, a melodic campaign on family planning in the 1980s.

President Tinubu honors the life of the multifaceted and exceptionally talented artist who dedicated herself to a wide range of artistic endeavors, spreading joy and laughter to many.

The President extends his condolences to the entertainment industry, the Imo State Government, and the many fans of the late star for this profound loss.

President Tinubu prays for the eternal peace of the deceased artist’s soul, wishing her a place where the music never fades and where there is ‘Dancing in the Sun.’

Family and friends gathered at the Ebony Vaults, Ikoyi to pay their last respect to the Music Icon before she was finally laid to rest.

Onyeka Onwenu is survived by her two sons.
