10 killed in US after driver ‘intentionally’ rams into crowd
At least 10 people were killed and 30 injured when a driver rammed a pickup truck into a crowd during New Year’s celebrations on Bourbon Street in New Orleans early on Wednesday morning.
The driver’s actions were “very intentional,” said police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick. “This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could.” The man also shot at police officers, hitting two, who are in stable condition, Kirkpatrick said.
The attack in the popular French Quarter happened just hours before the city is expected to host The Sugar Bowl, an annual college football game that draws fans from all over the country, with the University of Georgia taking on Notre Dame.
It seems most of the 30 people injured by the car that rammed into a crowd in New Orleans early Wednesday were local residents, not visitors, the city’s police chief said.
“We have information to a certain degree of the demographics of those who are in the hospital right now,” New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said in a news briefing Wednesday morning. “We do not know at this point how many could be tourists versus locals, but from the information I have right now, it seems the majority are locals.”
The attack in the French Quarter happened hours before the city is set to host the Sugar Bowl college football game, which draws hordes of fans from across the country.
On the suspect: Kirkpatrick said a man had driven a truck intentionally at high speed into the crowd of New Year’s revelers and also shot two police officers, who are in stable condition.
Police did not say whether the man was in custody or what his condition might be.
