Ella Emefiele’s new movie “The Scar” offers corrective surgery to victims of FGM
The scourge and pains of female genital mutilation, otherwise known as female circumcision continue to ravage and cause untold scars and pain in many African societies, where the shameful, barbaric, archaic and unpalatable practice is still being done.
It has become something of a cliche to say that the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM), which involves the vile cutting of the private part or clitoris of the female child, whether at birth or at a young age is no longer fashionable and has been tagged one of the worst criminal offences committed against the female gender by advocates and defenders of the rights of the female gender.
Not a few groups have sprang up in the last five decades to Mount pressure on the government and traditional leadership in various societies to call for the outlawing of the practice of female circumcision, with many calling for stringent and punitive measures to be meted to those still involved in it.
And seemingly drawing from this crusade against FGM, a Nigerian actress and Filmmaker, who resides in the United States of America Ella Emefiele, has released a movie, dubbed ‘The Scar’, which exposes the evil and ills of female genital mutilation.
It is not an understatement that movies and films are powerful tools to pass out relevant messages and since The Scar first hit the Nigerian cinema on October 8, the landscape has been changed, with more forces coming together to call for the total and immediate banning of the practice of female circumcision.
Ella Emefiele’s big screen movie, ‘The Scar’ primarily revolves around female genital mutilation (FGM) and its attendant, chronic and obtrusive negative effects in the lives of its victims.
To powerfully deliver the crux of her message to viewers, Ella Emefiele assembled a stellar cast, comprising Stella Damasus, Joseph Benjamin, Mercy Macjoe, Collins John Emeifele and herself.
The Scar” premiered in Nigerian cinemas on October 6, 2023.and followed by a later release in the United States
In The Scar, Ella Emefiele brought to the fore new hope for those scourged by FGM.
Ella Emefiele said, “Do you know that there’s corrective surgery for circumcision now. I had a friend in those days, who told me she had never cum in her life. If I know where to find her now I will let her watch this movie. Your circumcision can be corrected oh biko”.
Speaking further, Ella Emefiele said, “During my practice in Nigeria, I came across different women, most of them circumcised. I used to own a medical centre. Most of the women opened up to me about the challenges they faced because of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)”.
“So when I got to the USA, I discovered that there was a procedure called clitoroplasty (FGM reconstruction). After the procedure, a circumcised clitoris can then grow back, enabling the victim to have their groove back. Then I reached out to my friend and got her permission to put her story out”, Ella Emefiele.
