Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Ibrahim Gusau, has said that the federation will name a new coach for the Super Eagles “in a few days’ time.
The Eagles are without a coach since Finidi George resigned his position last month, following the disastrous outcome of the last round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic. Nigeria forced the Bafana Bafana to a draw at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo and suffered an embarrassing 2-1 defeat to the Cheetahs at Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan.
The results leave Nigeria on the verge of missing out on qualification for the next World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The NFF, afterwards, resolved to employ the services of a foreign coach, which forced Finidi to resign, saying he was not carried along by the federation while still on the job. With less than two weeks until the start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, the team is without a head coach.
But veteran journalist, Kunle Solaja, quoted Gusau as revealing in Nantes, France, on the sidelines of the ongoing 2024e Paris Olympics, that the NFF Technical Committee has already short-listed three coaches, out of which one will be chosen.
Although he said the NFF president declined to reveal the names of the coaches, it was said that the current coach of the France women’s team, Hervé Renard, is on the list, as his contract with the French Football Federation (FFF) ends at the end of the Olympics which closes on 11 August, and has indicated interest to move on from the team after the competition.
The Eagles will host Benin Republic in Uyo on September 2, in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers. Benin last month beat Nigeria 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier.
