IMC tentatively fixes January 8, 2023 as kickoff date of 2022/2023 NPFL season
The December 28 kickoff date of the 2022/2023 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season may no longer be feasible, if findings by TMY Newspapers.com are anything to by.
Rather the much postponed new league campaign may now get underway on January 8, 2023, when teams will launch the offensive to wrestle the title from defending champions, Rivers United.
Rivers United lifted the title in July after ending the season with 77 points, breaking the league record of 73 points in a league campaign.
Rivers United won 23 games and drew eight of their 38 league matches to finish ten points better than their closest pursuers Plateau United.
And after a meeting with stakeholders, the Interim Management Committee (IMC) concluded that the 2022/2023 NPFL season will commence on January 8, with the draw for the fixtures scheduled to take place on December 28.
The IMC also decided that a ten million naira takeoff grant will be handed to all 20 participating teams in the NPFL before any ball is kicked in the upcoming football campaign.
The Management Committee and the clubs also arrived at the agreement that the 2022/2023 season will take an abridged format,
