Two Dead After Violent Incident at IMAX Cinema in Lekki
Lagos police have launched an investigation after a violent confrontation involving an armed man at an IMAX cinema left two people dead and another security worker injured.
Two people have been confirmed dead following a violent incident at the IMAX Cinemas in Lekki, Lagos, on the night of August 29, 2026. According to reports, a man carrying bladed weapons attempted to gain entry into the cinema but was stopped by security personnel, triggering a confrontation that caused panic among customers and workers.
The Lagos State Police Command said the suspect allegedly attacked security personnel after being prevented from entering the premises. One security guard was reported dead, while another sustained injuries during the incident. Police said the suspected attacker also later died during the confrontation.
The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation. Police spokesperson SP Adebisi Abimbola said authorities are working to establish the identity of the attacker and determine the full sequence of events that led to the two deaths.
Police have also taken the cinema’s Chief Security Officer into custody as part of the investigation. Authorities are seeking to obtain and review CCTV footage from the location to better understand what happened and determine whether any other individuals were involved.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about security around entertainment venues and other crowded public spaces in Lagos. Filmhouse Group said it was cooperating with authorities and had introduced additional security measures while investigations continue. Police have not yet released the identities of those who died, and the condition of the injured security worker was not immediately clear.
