Bendel Insurance Chairman, Jarrett Tenebe Celebrates as Edo Queens Clinch 2025/26 NWFL Premiership Title
Edo Queens were on Sunday crowned champions of the 2025/26 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership after battling to a hard-fought 0–0 draw against Bayelsa Queens in the final matchday of the Super Six playoffs held at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
The result was enough to hand the Benin-based side the coveted league title, having entered the decisive fixture needing only a draw, while Bayelsa Queens required an outright victory to emerge champions.
In a tense and closely contested encounter, both sides created scoring opportunities but were unable to find the breakthrough as Edo Queens executed their game plan with discipline and resilience to secure the point they needed.
The triumph marks Edo Queens’ second NWFL Premiership title, further cementing their status as one of the dominant teams in Nigerian women’s football. The achievement also places them alongside Bayelsa Queens as the only clubs to have won the league twice within the last six seasons.
Head Coach Moses Aduku equally made history with the victory, becoming the first manager to win three NWFL Premiership titles in six seasons. Aduku previously guided Bayelsa Queens to the championship in 2022 before leading Edo Queens to league successes in 2024 and now 2026.
Reacting to the achievement, dignitaries and stakeholders from Edo State football circles, including Bendel Insurance Football Club Chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, joined in celebrating the remarkable feat, describing the title win as a testament to the state’s growing investment and commitment to sports development.
Elsewhere on the final day of the Super Six playoffs, Nasarawa Amazons and hosts Rivers Angels settled for a goalless draw, while FC Robo Queens fought back to earn a 1–1 draw against Abia Angels.
At the end of the competition, Edo Queens finished top of the Super Six standings with 10 points, two points ahead of runners-up Bayelsa Queens. Nasarawa Amazons completed the top three, while debutants Abia Angels finished with six points. FC Robo Queens and Rivers Angels ended their campaigns with four points each.
Individual awards also highlighted the outstanding performances recorded during the season. FC Robo Queens’ Oluwakemi Adegbuyi was named Player of the Season, while Fatima Oloko claimed the Goalkeeper of the Season award. Rivers Angels’ Abasiofon Uwah and Edo Queens’ Atume Doosuur shared the Golden Boot award after scoring 13 goals each, while Rivers Angels received the Fair Play Prize.
As champions, Edo Queens will now represent Nigeria at the WAFU-B Women’s Champions League qualifiers scheduled to hold in Burkina Faso from August 13 to September 5. The team will be aiming to secure a place in the CAF Women’s Champions League and continue their quest for a spot at the FIFA Women’s Club World Cup.
The grand finale attracted several notable personalities, including NFF Board Member Aisha Falode, former NFF Board Member Barr. Chris Green, Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Peter Akor, Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports Daniel Igali, Edo State Sports Commission Chairman Desmond Enabulele, NFF Director of Competitions Ruth David, and Bendel Insurance Chairman Jarrett Tenebe, among other football stakeholders.
